Diesel Engine Diagnostics

Benefits of Performing Regular Diesel Engine Diagnostics

Most diesel engine problems can be prevented with regular maintenance before they cause real damage to your truck, which is why our experts recommend that you perform routine diesel engine diagnostic checks. These are some of the main benefits:

Common Diesel Engine Problems

Cummins & Caterpillar make some of the most well-built diesel engines available today, but even the best engines can experience performance issues and faults occasionally. Here are some of the most common diesel engine problems that we provide repairs for:

EGR Valve Leaks – An issue with your EGR valve will cause increased nitrogen oxide emissions. Warning signs include increased coolant consumption and white residue left behind by burnt coolant, reduced acceleration, less efficient fuel, rough idling, and an illuminated check engine light.

Clogged Fuel Filters – If your fuel filter has collected too much dirt and debris it can cause the engine to idle roughly when cold, feel like it’s going to stall, sputter, have trouble accelerating, and even prevent the engine from starting.

Camshaft Flattening – Notorious with the ISX engine, this is largely due to an issue with poor valve maintenance and the rocker arms sticking and hitting the camshaft (poor lubrication), causing them to flatten. There are no specific symptoms to indicate this problem until you notice a decrease in the overall performance of your engine.

Dropped Cylinder Liners – If a piston seizes then the cylinder liner can break at the bottom and drop into the engine’s borehole. If the piston or connecting rod gets free of the liner it starts to deteriorate the entire engine block, which is obviously a very expensive repair. Early warning signs are an overheating engine block, coolant system pressurizing, and coolant leaks.

Timing Problems – A faulty or failing timing can cause delays in the opening of the valves and can eventually require engine retiming. Incorrect timing can cause severe engine damage.

Fuel Pump Issues – Lift pumps can break down without any warning signs. This causes the rest of the system to work harder to compensate for the broken or weakened fuel pump, putting strain on the entire fuel injector system. Symptoms include engine sputtering, loss of power, rough idle, and inability to start, fault codes.

Cracked Engine Block – Engine blocks can often crack when the water walls are thin. Symptoms can include poor engine performance due to low engine compression, engine smoke, overheating due to leaking antifreeze, discoloration in oil or antifreeze, leaking oil/coolant, and excessive smoke from the exhaust.

Misfiring – A misfiring engine is often caused by an issue with the fuel injectors, but can also sometimes be an electrical issue as well. A proper diagnostic can help determine the root cause of this.

Failed Gaskets – Vibrations from the engine and temperature fluctuations can cause premature gasket failure. Lost clamping force can create costly components wear but can also create bolts to come loose and breach the timing case causing a large oil spill, or worst-case scenario it will jam between the timing gears and cause catastrophic damage to the engine.

Whether you’re doing routine diagnostics and preventative maintenance or are already experiencing any of these issues, our certified mechanics have the tools and expertise to accurately diagnose and repair the problem. Our main objective is always to get you back on the road in a timely manner and earning money again.
